Does timing really matter?
For the exchange rate, a little. Rates drift over days and weeks, so sending when the rate is stronger means more birr — but don't wait so long that your family needs the money. For speed, timing matters more than for rate.
Watch the short-term trend
A 30-day rate chart shows the direction. If the rate has been climbing, you're getting more birr per unit; if it's falling, sending sooner may be better. Nobody can predict rates perfectly, so use the trend as a guide, not a guarantee.
Timing for speed
Weekends and Ethiopian bank holidays can delay bank deposits. Wallet (telebirr) and cash pickup are least affected by timing. Sending early in the week avoids weekend processing gaps.
A simple rule
If you need the money to arrive fast, choose a wallet or cash payout and don't worry about the day. If you're optimising the rate, glance at the 30-day trend and avoid sending on a clearly weak day — but never delay a transfer your family is relying on.
A worked example: the same $300, two weeks apart
Suppose the best live rate is 158 birr one week and 162 the next. The same $300 delivers 47,400 birr in week one and 48,600 in week two — a 1,200 birr difference for doing nothing but checking the trend. That is meaningful, but notice the scale: choosing the wrong provider on the same day often costs more than the wrong week.
Ethiopian holidays and paydays
Ethiopian bank holidays (Timket, Meskel, Ethiopian New Year and others) pause bank-deposit processing, while telebirr and cash pickup keep working. Around big holidays demand for transfers also spikes — send a day or two early so the money is there before the celebration, not after.

Is there a best day of the week? Rates do not follow a weekly pattern you can exploit, but sending Monday–Thursday avoids weekend processing delays for bank deposits. Should I split a large transfer? Sometimes — if the trend is rising, splitting captures the improvement; if falling, send it all now. Is the 30-day chart a prediction? No — it shows direction, not the future.
